NSC Staffing is hiring a Dry Dock Mechanic Handyman – J4 to join our team in Norfolk, VA. This is a hands-on role in the drydock environment requiring advanced mechanical knowledge, the ability to work independently, and strong attention to safety and quality. Local candidates only. Key Responsibilities:
- Perform drydock mechanical duties including block fabrication, diesel engine operations, and equipment monitoring.
- Conduct watch duties, respond to drydock alarms, and maintain operational readiness of drydock systems.
- Diagnose, repair, and install drydock equipment using technical manuals, diagrams, and hand tools.
- Ensure job site safety, compliance with hot work and WAF permits, and proper PPE use.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
- Interpret technical drawings and publications to complete repair tasks effectively.
- Navigate vessels and understand compartment designations.
- Journeyperson 4 level experience with minimal supervision required.
- Strong knowledge of drydock operations, shipyard safety procedures, and mechanical systems.
- Proficient with tools, measuring instruments (micrometer, tachometer, dial indicator, caliper), and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to read technical drawings and follow operational procedures.
- Excellent communication skills and understanding of PPE usage.
- Must have reliable transportation and be able to work aboard vessels, in confined spaces, and at heights.
- Able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces.
- Standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and operating equipment for extended periods.
- Visual and auditory acuity to perform mechanical tasks safely and effectively.
- Exposure to varying weather, heights, fumes, dust, vibration, and confined areas.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- May require up to 10% travel.
- PPE and respirator use required.
- No security clearance required.
