As a Shipyard Outside Machinist, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and operating various mechanical equipment used in the marine industry. You will work in a shipyard environment, often outdoors, and may be required to work at heights or in confined spaces. Your primary goal will be to ensure that all machinery on board ships is functioning correctly, safely, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment on ships, including engines, generators, pumps, valves, and hydraulic systems.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics to determine the layout, assembly, and installation of machinery and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with mechanical equipment and develop solutions to fix them.
  • Conduct regular maintenance on machinery to ensure it is functioning correctly and to prevent breakdowns or other issues.
  • Fabricate and repair parts using lathes, mills, and other machine tools.
  • Use precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers and gauges, to ensure that machinery is functioning within specifications.
  • Operate equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery to move parts and equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Military, vocational or technical school training in machine technology, mechanical engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a machinist in a shipyard or marine environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other marine equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Proficient in the use of machine tools, including lathes, mills, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery, such as cranes and forklifts.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with precision.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
