NSC Staffing is seeking a Manual Machinist to support complex marine and shipyard repair operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with manual machining, blueprint interpretation, precision alignment, and hands-on repair of critical marine systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Read and interpret blueprints and technical documents to execute machining tasks.
  2. Utilize precision tools including micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gauges, and dividing heads.
  3. Operate manual machine tools to exacting tolerances, including ½ thousandths or greater.
  4. Perform maintenance and repair of portable machine tools.
  5. Regularly operate hoisting and rigging equipment such as forklifts and chain falls.
  6. Determine system tolerances and ensure application meets project specifications.
  7. Conduct daily tasks on the following systems:
    • Rudders and Steering Systems: Alignment using piano wire methods, hydraulic/pneumatic controls, stock straightness.
    • Bearings & Bushings: Fit and alignment with piano wire methods, lubrication, dial indicator alignment.
    • Engines, Motors & Generators: Work with diesel engines, turbines, PTOs, heat exchangers, system flushing, and leak testing.
    • Propulsion Shafting: Alignment, wear down measurements, bearing contact checks, shaft straightness determination.
    • Seals: Install and test gaskets, O-rings, mechanical seals, labyrinth seals.
    • Valves: Leak testing, lapping, packing replacement, lubrication.
    • Propellers: Installation and polishing, including CPP systems, keyed/tapered/flanged fits.
    • Pumps & Deck Machinery: Alignment using dial indicators/laser tools, working with gearboxes, bearings, seal arrangements.
  8. Supervise and mentor lower-class machinists, manage work assignments, and material requisitions.
  9. Enforce strict safety practices including proper handling of gases, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, PPE usage, and respirator compliance.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a manual machinist in field or marine environments.
  • Strong experience operating manual lathes and mills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, technical drawings, and manuals.
  • Mechanical aptitude, dexterity, and hand/eye coordination required.
  • Clean driving record.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Technical training or formal apprenticeship highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment up to 20 lbs or greater depending on task requirements.
  • Physically agile to work aboard ships, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and operate in extreme conditions (heat, humidity, noise).
  • Willing to ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Frequent exposure to loud equipment and industrial environments.
  • Must be capable of wearing protective clothing, respirators, face shields, or other PPE as required.
