Position Overview: As a shipyard mechanic you will be responsible for fitting and tacking various metals on ships or in shops, supporting mechanical repairs, and leading assigned helpers. Candidates will complete a hands on skills assessment for welding or fitting to determine mechanical aptitude and skill set.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform layouts, ripouts, and tacking for ship repair and modernization projects on marine vessels, including military and commercial ships.
- Utilize a variety of power and hand tools to fabricate pieces, including using a torch to cut metals according to specification
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and Navy/MSC/ABS standards.
- Safely operate and maintain welding equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools.
- Ensure compliance with all OSHA standards and wear proper PPE, including hard hats, respirators, safety harnesses, and flotation gear as required.
- 1-2+ years of experience supporting shipyard structural welders and fitters
- Understanding of ship repair terminology and ability to interpret technical drawings and manuals.
- Physically capable of wearing all required PPE and adhering to OSHA safety standards.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and familiarity with both U.S. customary and metric measurement systems.
