NSC Staffing is seeking a Fire Watch to join our team in Norfolk, VA. This position is responsible for fire prevention and fire protection at the assigned work site. If you are experienced in fire safety procedures and have the required certifications, we want to hear from you!
Position Overview:
As a Fire Watch, you will be responsible for carrying out fire prevention and protection tasks, ensuring the safety of personnel, customers, and company property. You will monitor hot work areas, handle fire extinguishers, and ensure all safety protocols are followed. The ideal candidate will have a Fire Watch training card, knowledge of fire safety systems, and the ability to communicate effectively under pressure.
Key Responsibilities:
You will work in a shipyard environment, varying from office-like conditions to working outdoors in extreme weather (heat, cold, high humidity). Inside vessels, the environment may be smoky, hot, or freezing, with low illumination levels. PPE is mandatory, and safety is always the priority. The noise level in the shipyard environment is usually loud, especially inside vessels.
You may be required to work in confined spaces, on scaffolding, or using mechanical lifts. Work can also involve operating in areas with moving equipment and power tools.

Key Responsibilities:
- Carry your Fire Watch training card at all times while on the job.
- Perform Fire Watch duties to protect personnel, customers, and company property from fire hazards.
- Ensure the designated hot work area is clean and combustible materials-free before hot work begins.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, especially at the end of your shift.
- Warn others of danger or the need to evacuate using verbal or other prearranged methods of communication.
- Show initiative and ownership of work and work area.
- Comply with safety rules, have an excellent work ethic, and be accountable for completing work assignments.
- Report any unsafe conditions or behaviors to the supervisor or journeyman.
- Carry a fire extinguisher to the work site and ensure it is in proper working condition.
- Suppress fires when they occur and notify the person performing hot work when it is safe to proceed or when there is danger.
- Assist with hot work procedures and audits, ensuring hot work notifications are valid.
- Must possess a Fire Watch training card.
- Ability to comprehend basic instructions and general correspondence.
- Ability to clearly communicate verbally to warn others of fire or other dangers.
- Understand fixed and portable fire protection systems and how they are activated.
- Knowledge of the types of fire, materials involved, and the correct fire extinguisher to use.
- Ability to understand and follow the Shipyard Competent Person Report.
- Ability to wear appropriate work clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators.
- Ability to work in various conditions, including confined spaces and heights.

- Must be able to tour all vessels, piers, docks, and work sites.
- Frequently required to lift, push, and pull up to 20-30 lbs (34-66% of the day) and occasionally up to 75 lbs (0-33% of the day).
- Perform prolonged standing (2-3 hours), bending, squatting, crawling, and kneeling.
- Climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and ramps safely.
- Ability to work at various heights above 12 feet.
- Must have sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
- Ability to access work areas through 18x36 openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods (33-66% of the day).
- Respond to visual, verbal, and audible commands and sounds.
- Work in various positions and levels (e.g., waist, eye, above head).
