Job Title: Temporary Service Mechanic (J1–J4)

NSC Staffing is hiring Temporary Service Mechanics (Journeyperson Levels 1–4) to support shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA.
This is a day shift position (6:00 AM – 2:45 PM) supporting temporary utility services onboard Navy vessels and in the shipyard. Candidates will be placed at the appropriate journeyperson level based on experience and capability.
Key Responsibilities:
Duties and expectations vary by journeyperson level (1–4) and include but are not limited to:
Journeyperson 4 (Lead-Level Mechanic):
- Oversee small teams and delegate assignments effectively.
- Plan, organize, and execute work independently with minimal supervision.
- Maintain and install freeze protection systems and backflow preventers.
- Repair and overhaul temporary fire stations.
- Install temperature-controlled water coolers aboard ship.
- Proficient with OSHA and NAVSEA Standard Items.
- Perform hydrostatic tests and maintain freeze protection/backflow systems.
- Install air dryers, quick disconnects, and temporary shipboard systems.
- Inspect, repair, and test air and water manifolds.
- Conduct walk-throughs to ensure compliance with NAVSEA 009-07, 009-08, and 009-28.
- Minimal supervision required.
- Assist in routing and inspecting temporary services with some supervision.
- Place water coolers, install air dryers, and support manifold installations.
- Participate in freeze protection setup and inspection.
- Grow into advanced capabilities under supervision.
- Support routing of hoses, lines, and leads.
- Read ship layout drawings and follow WAF procedures.
- Understand ship nomenclature and basic ventilation principles.
- Perform inspections of rental equipment (compressors, generators).
- Maintain safety and cleanliness at job sites.
- Operate forklifts and handle fuel safely.
- Use PPE and follow safety standards.
- Varying experience based on journeyperson level; entry to lead-level mechanics welcome to apply.
- Ability to read and interpret ship layouts and Standard Items (NAVSEA 009-series).
- Forklift certification (required for Journeyperson 1).
- Experience with rental equipment setup, inspection, and fuel handling.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English.
- Strong understanding of safety, PPE use, and shipyard procedures.
- Must be dependable, team-oriented, and safety-focused.
