Position Overview:
As the Steel Department Supervisor, you will oversee and coordinate all activities related to the steel department, including supervising employees and managing schedules for projects in our fabrication shops and on the waterfront. This role requires a hands-on approach to training, planning, and ensuring the safe and efficient completion of both new construction and repair projects. You will work closely with senior leadership, stakeholders, and the workforce to meet production goals and quality standards.

As the Steel Department Supervisor, you will oversee and coordinate all activities related to the steel department, including supervising employees and managing schedules for projects in our fabrication shops and on the waterfront. This role requires a hands-on approach to training, planning, and ensuring the safe and efficient completion of both new construction and repair projects. You will work closely with senior leadership, stakeholders, and the workforce to meet production goals and quality standards.
- Planning & Directing Work: Oversee new construction and repair projects, ensuring tasks are completed on schedule.
- Employee Training & Instruction: Train employees on the most efficient methods for completing jobs and ensure work quality.
- Team Leadership & Supervision: Lead and mentor a team of 10 to 20 employees, providing guidance and support while enforcing company policies.
- Blueprint Interpretation & Materials Management: Read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings, ensuring required materials and task sequences are accurately followed.
- Worksite Inspection & Quality Control: Inspect work progress, equipment, and work sites to ensure specifications are met.
- Collaboration & Communication: Serve as a resource for key stakeholders, including crews, boat representatives, and senior leadership.
- Project Budgeting & Meetings: Establish project budgets, attend meetings, and resolve any conflicts or issues that arise.
- Promote Safety & Quality: Maintain a commitment to the company’s Quality, Environmental, Health, and Safety Policies, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Performance Evaluation & Documentation: Complete performance appraisals, manage employee documentation, and engage in regular testing and inspections of workpieces.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Excellent communication skills
- Highly accountable and responsible
- ASNT NDT Level II Certification or willingness to complete the certification
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Desired Qualifications
- Prior shipyard or steel fabrication experience
- 3+ years of management experience or relevant education
- 3+ years of experience as a structural steel fitter or ship fitter
- Experience in quality control and inspection
- Strong math skills and experience with Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of ABS, USCG, NEC, IEEE 45 standards
This role is based at a large shipbuilding facility, including both indoor and outdoor work on the waterfront. The job requires physical stamina and the ability to handle energetic pursuits on the job site.
