NSC Staffing is hiring a Seam Welder to perform high-quality welding for military ship components. The ideal candidate will be skilled in seam welding using ceramic backing or tape to achieve strong, clean welds that meet stringent military standards for durability and performance. This position requires experience in a shipyard setting and the ability to pass a skills assessment test and weld inspection.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welding Operations: Perform seam welding using techniques like Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) with ceramic backing or tape to achieve watertight, structurally sound seams in a single pass, meeting military specifications.
- Ceramic Application: Apply and position ceramic materials (e.g., ceramic tape or tiles) to prevent burn-through, improve bead appearance, and ensure compliance with military specifications.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to determine seam locations, dimensions, and ceramic backing specifications.
- Material Preparation: Inspect, clean, and prepare metal surfaces (steel, aluminum, or alloys) for welding, including cutting, grinding, and aligning ceramic backing materials.
- Quality Assurance: Perform visual inspections of welds and prepare them for non-destructive testing (NDT) like X-ray or ultrasonic testing, ensuring compliance with NAVSEA or MIL-STD standards.
- Test Structure: Complete 2 seam tests in 3 positions, each made up of 4 plates to simulate the intersection of seams on hull plating.
- Welding Positions: 1G position for the first test, and 2G/3G position for the second.
- Welding Materials: All welding is done with .052 dual shield flux core, and all root passes use ceramic tape.
- Inspection Process: All seam test plates are visually inspected and sent out for X-ray.
- Experience: 3-5+ years of relevant piping experience, with shipyard experience highly preferred.
- Documentation: Must present original U.S. person documentation (e.g., U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or permanent resident card).
- Shift Availability: Must be open to any shift, including three 8-hour shifts Monday through Friday, with overtime available on weekends.
- Certification/Testing: Must pass the standard 2G, 3G, and 4G FCAW flux core welding test and a skills assessment.
- Background Check: Must pass a standard background check, urine drug screen, and BAT (Breath Alcohol Test) prior to orientation.
- Travelers: Must provide per diem documentation (e.g., utility bill, lease, or W2) indicating residence 80+ miles from the job site. One-week hotel accommodation may be advanced for travelers after passing the skills assessment, medical screening, and orientation.
- OSHA 10 Maritime certification is preferred.
- Steel-toed leather work boots with a 1/4 inch heel are required.
- Tools and PPE will be provided at the job site.
