What direct hire staffing is.

Direct hire, also called permanent placement, is recruiting where the candidate becomes your employee from day one. NSC runs the search, the screening, the interviews and the offer process. You make the hire, the person goes on your payroll and benefits, and you pay NSC a one-time placement fee tied to the hire. There is no hourly markup, no conversion fee and no NSC paperwork in the middle of your employee relationship.

  • You own the employee: W-2 on your books, your benefits, your culture, from the first shift
  • NSC owns the search: sourcing, trade testing, credential verification, reference checks, interview scheduling, offer negotiation
  • One fee, paid on hire: a percentage of first-year compensation, agreed up front, with a replacement guarantee period written into the agreement
  • Built for permanent roles: supervisors, leads, technicians, journeyman trades and the hard-to-fill specialists that temp pools never reach

It sits alongside NSC's temporary, temp-to-hire and project staffing, so the same partner can cover surge crews and the permanent bench that runs them.

When direct hire is the right call

Temp and temp-to-hire are the right tools for variable headcount. Direct hire is the right tool when the role is permanent, the cost of a bad hire is high, and the candidate you want is already employed somewhere else and not scrolling job boards.

Signal 01

The role is structural

Maintenance lead, plant supervisor, QA manager, shop foreman, site superintendent. These seats run the operation. Churn in them costs more than the search fee ever will.

Signal 02

The talent is passive

The best industrial electrician in your county is employed and happy. Direct hire recruiting reaches people who are not applying anywhere, through a recruiter who already knows them.

Signal 03

You want them on your paper

Union agreements, government contracts, benefits parity or retention plans sometimes require the employee to be yours from day one. Direct hire delivers that cleanly.

Signal 04

Internal recruiting is tapped out

HR is posting, boosting and waiting. Twelve weeks later the seat is still open and overtime is covering it. A dedicated industrial recruiter changes the math.

Signal 05

Credentials are non-negotiable

Journeyman cards, AWS certs, OSHA 30, security clearances, BICSI, EPA 608. NSC verifies before you interview, so the shortlist is real.

Signal 06

You are opening a new site

New plant, new yard, new data center. You need the permanent leadership team before the surge crews arrive. Direct hire builds that core; NSC staffing fills around it.

Direct hire vs temp-to-hire vs contract staffing

NSC offers all three, so this is not a sales pitch for one. It is the decision table our account managers walk through with every client.

02

Market & Fee Agreement

Honest read on the local talent market and comp. One placement fee and guarantee period, agreed in writing before sourcing starts.

03

Shortlist & Interview

05

Offer & Onboard

We manage the offer, counteroffer risk, resignation and start date. Then we check in through the guarantee period so the hire sticks.

Why industrial employers choose NSC for direct hire

Most permanent placement firms are generalists who learned your trade last week. NSC has recruited welders, electricians, machinists and the people who supervise them for more than 25 years, with roots inside a mechanical contractor. That shows up in the shortlist.

  • A built bench, not a borrowed one: more than one million pre-vetted workers, searchable by trade, credential and zip code, with trade-specialised recruiters who already know the candidates worth calling
  • Recruiters who speak the trade: local offices in 27 markets staffed by people who know what a Class A journeyman card means and what it costs in that county
  • Safety-led screening: the NSC Safe program and OSHA discipline apply to permanent placements too, so the hire arrives with the documentation and mindset your site requires
  • Verified before you meet them: trade tests, license and certification checks, reference calls and work history confirmed before a candidate reaches your calendar
  • One partner, whole org chart: direct hire for the permanent core, temp-to-hire and contract crews around it, payroll, MSP and VMS, workforce management and skills development under one agreement

Direct hire staffing FAQ

What is direct hire staffing?

Direct hire staffing, also called permanent placement, is a recruiting service where the staffing firm finds, screens and presents candidates, and the client hires the chosen candidate directly as its own full-time employee. The new hire goes on the employer's payroll and benefits from day one. The staffing firm is paid a one-time placement fee rather than an hourly markup.

How does NSC charge for direct hire?

A single placement fee, calculated as a percentage of the hire's first-year base compensation and agreed in writing before the search begins. Nothing is owed until the candidate accepts your offer and starts. There is no hourly bill rate, no wage markup and no conversion fee. The exact percentage depends on role level, scarcity and market, and we will quote it in the first conversation.

Is there a guarantee if the hire does not work out?

Yes. Every NSC direct hire agreement includes a replacement guarantee period. If the employee leaves or is released for performance within that window, NSC runs a replacement search at no additional fee. The length of the guarantee is set in the agreement and varies by role.

How long does a direct hire search take?

Most searches deliver a vetted shortlist within two to three weeks and an accepted offer within four to eight weeks. Supervisory and specialist roles that require specific licenses, clearances or relocation can take longer. Because NSC starts from a pre-vetted database of more than one million workers and 27 local offices, we are usually faster than a cold search, and we will give you a realistic timeline for your specific role at intake.

What is the difference between direct hire and temp-to-hire?

In direct hire, the candidate is your employee from the first day and you pay a one-time placement fee. In temp-to-hire, the worker is employed by NSC during a trial period at an hourly bill rate, and you convert them to your payroll afterward, usually with a conversion fee. Direct hire suits permanent, high-impact roles and passive candidates who will not leave a job for a temporary assignment. Temp-to-hire suits roles where you want to evaluate fit before committing. NSC offers both.

Which roles does NSC place on a direct hire basis?

Permanent roles across skilled trades and construction, manufacturing, infrastructure and defense, light industrial and warehouse, marine construction and repair, and industrial leadership. Common searches include plant and shift supervisors, industrial maintenance technicians, journeyman and master electricians, certified welders and weld inspectors, CNC programmers, data center technicians, low-voltage project managers, project managers, help desk technicians, systems administrators, network administrators, network engineers and Cisco certified network professionals, EHS managers, superintendents, estimators and operations leaders.

How does NSC screen direct hire candidates?

Every candidate on an NSC shortlist has been interviewed by a trade-specialised recruiter, trade tested where applicable, and had licenses, certifications and references verified. Safety history and documentation are reviewed under the NSC Safe program. You receive a written summary with each candidate so your interviews start from a verified baseline rather than a resume.

Does NSC recruit direct hire candidates nationally or only near its offices?

Both. NSC runs direct hire searches from 27 offices across 16 states, and recruits nationally for roles that justify relocation. The database covers all 50 states, so a search can draw on verified tradespeople and technicians who are willing to relocate for permanent work.

Can NSC combine direct hire with temporary or contract staffing?

Yes, and most industrial clients do. A typical structure is direct hire for the permanent leadership and technical core, temp-to-hire for the next tier, and contract crews for surges, projects and shutdowns, all under one agreement with one account manager. NSC also provides payroll, MSP and VMS support, workforce management and skills development alongside placement.

Is there any cost to job seekers?

No. Candidates never pay NSC. The employer pays the placement fee. If you are a tradesperson, technician or supervisor looking for a permanent position, register with NSC or apply to an open role and a recruiter will contact you about direct hire opportunities that match your credentials and location.

Fill the seat once, and fill it right.

Tell us the role, the site and what the last person did well. NSC will bring a verified shortlist, a straight timeline and one fee you only pay when the hire is made.
